Helsinki Opera House: renovated inside a summer break, finished weeks early
SRG-Urakointi renovated parts of the Helsinki Opera House during the summer of 2023, with takt covering the HVAC upgrade, the sewer renewal and the 47 changing rooms. 27 takts ran across 15 takt areas in 3 months. SRG's share finished weeks ahead of schedule and under budget.
“
The schedule was given special attention here and everyone, including the subcontractors, followed it meticulously. In the areas with repetitive work, such as bathrooms, the work was completed well ahead of schedule.

What was done
The Opera House is 30 years old and parts of it were renovated over one summer. The wider job covered the main stage and the saunas as well; takt covered Mestamaster's share:
- HVAC upgraded in the foyer
- 6 km of sewage plumbing renewed
- 47 changing rooms refurbished
How it was done
Senaatti wrote takt production into the procurement documents and pushed for it, so the takt was in place before the contractor started. The project opened with workshops on the schedule and moved into construction quickly. The contractor had seven working days a week available, so the takt was set at three days, two takts per week, which is not how a takt is usually divided. Mestamaster stayed on the project throughout and ran the morning huddles.
Results
The schedule was the constraint. The owner and the user needed the work finished inside a summer break stretched to four months, so that the Opera's autumn season could open in August. SRG's share was completed weeks ahead of schedule and under budget, and the repetitive parts of the work, the bathrooms among them, ran particularly well.
