Kajavankatu: a pipe renovation in half the time, on a one-day takt
Respect Project ran a pipe renovation through a 1970s concrete element apartment complex in Kerava on a one-day takt, with one apartment as the takt area. 130 takts ran across 95 apartments in 6 months, against the 12 months a conventional pipe renovation of this size takes.
“
Takt showed how much good preparation matters. Design, resources and the preceding work all had to be finished on time. Meetings every morning kept everyone on the project up to date. It is a good method to focus on for production development.

The one-day takt certainly showed its sensitivity and its challenges, but it also proved what takt can do.
What was done
A pipe renovation of a 1970s concrete element apartment complex:
- Sewer lines and fresh water piping renewed
- Surfaces renovated across 95 apartments
- Walls rebuilt where the old metal element bathrooms were removed
How it was done
The takt was one day, with one apartment as the takt area, and the work ran from the top of each line downwards. Almost everything inside the apartments was on takt, starting from the demolition. A one-day takt only holds if the routines around it hold: daily meetings, and subcontractors brought into the takt scheduling early, were what carried this project.
Results
Each apartment took 5 to 8 weeks instead of the usual 10, and the project finished in 6 months instead of 12. Respect Project went on to use takt on all of its projects, and extended it into project risk management.
